We Proudly Accept Colorado Medicaid (Health First Colorado)

What is Health First Colorado?

Health First Colorado is Colorado’s Medicaid program, providing comprehensive healthcare coverage to eligible Colorado residents. The dental benefits are managed through a partnership with DentaQuest, which helps coordinate care and assists patients in finding participating dental providers like Mountain View Family Dental.

Comprehensive Dental Coverage for All Ages

Health First Colorado provides dental benefits for members of all ages, with particularly strong coverage for children and comprehensive benefits for adults. Adult dental benefits had no annual cap between July 2023 and June 2026. As of July 1, 2026 they are capped at $3,000 per benefit year, and the benefit year runs from July 1 to June 30. Emergency treatment and dentures are exempt, so they don’t count toward the cap.

Children’s Dental Benefits

Children under 21 receive comprehensive dental coverage through the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) program. This means children can receive any medically necessary dental service, including preventive care, treatments, and specialized procedures when recommended by their dentist.

Adult Dental Benefits

Adult members (21 and older) have access to a wide range of dental services including preventive care, diagnostic services, basic restorative treatments, and emergency care. The program covers essential services such as routine cleanings, examinations, X-rays, fillings, extractions, and other necessary treatments to maintain oral health.

Who Qualifies for Health First Colorado?

Health First Colorado serves various groups of Colorado residents, including

  • Low-income families and individuals
  • Children and pregnant women
  • People with disabilities
  • Seniors who meet income requirements
  • Adults under 65 with household income up to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level

Eligibility is primarily based on income, household size, and other specific circumstances. The program also covers lawfully present immigrants. Since January 2025, Cover All Coloradans has extended coverage to children and pregnant people who qualify on income regardless of immigration status, and as of July 1, 2026 its dental benefit is capped at $1,100 a year.

How to Use Your Health First Colorado Dental Benefits at Our Office

When you visit Mountain View Family Dental with Health First Colorado coverage, the process is straightforward:

Bring Your ID Card

Always bring your Health First Colorado member ID card to every appointment. You should have received this card along with a welcome packet from DentaQuest containing important information about your dental benefits.

In-Network Care

As a Health First Colorado participating provider, we’re part of the approved network, which means you can receive covered services without worrying about out-of-network charges.

Know Your Annual Limit

Adult benefits are capped at $3,000 per benefit year. We check what you have left with DentaQuest before planning treatment, so a long course of work doesn’t run out of coverage part way through.

Coordination with DentaQuest

We work directly with DentaQuest to verify your benefits, obtain any necessary pre-authorizations, and ensure smooth processing of your claims.

Preventive Care is Key

Health First Colorado emphasizes the importance of preventive dental care, and so do we. Regular checkups, cleanings, and early treatment of dental issues not only maintain your oral health but can also prevent more serious and costly problems down the road. The program recognizes that good oral health is connected to overall health, helping to reduce complications related to diabetes, heart disease, and other medical conditions.

What Health First Colorado Covers

Health First Colorado is Colorado's Medicaid program, and it includes a dental benefit for both children and adults. Children's coverage is the more generous of the two: exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions and — where it is medically necessary — orthodontic treatment.

Adult coverage is real but narrower, and it works on an annual limit that runs on the state's benefit year rather than the calendar year. The state has changed that limit more than once, so we deliberately do not print a figure here that could be out of date by the time you read it. Call us and we will look up what you currently have before you commit to anything.

Usually covered for adults

  • Exams, cleanings and x-rays
  • Fillings and other basic restorative work
  • Extractions
  • Root canals, subject to approval
  • Full and partial dentures
  • Emergency treatment for pain, swelling or infection

Some of these need prior authorization, which means the state has to agree to the treatment before it starts. We handle that paperwork — it is a normal part of the job and not something you should have to chase.

How to Check Whether You Are Covered

You do not need to work this out on your own before you call. Give us your Health First Colorado ID when you book and we will verify your eligibility and your remaining benefit, then tell you what is covered and what is not before we start. If something falls outside the benefit, you will hear the cost from us in advance rather than in a bill afterwards.

If it turns out you are not eligible, that is not the end of the conversation. We accept most insurance plans, offer a membership plan for patients without insurance, and can talk through financing. Ask about payment options when you call.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

  • Your Health First Colorado card, or your member ID number
  • A photo ID
  • A list of any medications you take
  • Details of any recent dental treatment elsewhere, if you have them

Most of our team speaks Spanish, so if you would rather go through your coverage in Spanish, say so when you call and we will make sure the right person is with you.

In Pain and on Medicaid?

Do not wait for an appointment to open up in a few weeks. Emergency dental treatment — pain, swelling, an infection, a broken tooth — is covered, and we keep time aside each day for people who need to be seen quickly. Call us in the morning if you can, and tell whoever answers that you are in pain, so we can triage it properly rather than book you as a routine check-up.

A dental infection is not something to sit on. Left alone it can spread, and what would have been a straightforward filling becomes a root canal or an extraction. Cost is the usual reason people wait — if you are covered, that reason does not apply, so please come in.

Missed Appointments on Medicaid

One thing worth knowing in advance: missed Medicaid appointments are reported to the state. That is a requirement of the program rather than a decision this practice makes, and it applies to every Medicaid provider. If you cannot make an appointment, call us and we will move it — our full cancellation policy explains what we ask for.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Do you accept Colorado Medicaid?

Yes — we accept Colorado State Medicaid as well as all PPO insurance. Bring your card to your first visit so we can verify your benefits.

What does Medicaid cover for dental care?

Coverage depends on your eligibility category and can change, so we verify your specific benefits before treatment rather than telling you what's covered in general terms.

What if a treatment isn't covered?

We'll tell you before we do it, and go through the alternatives. We also offer discounts for patients paying cash and an in-house membership plan.
