What Crowns Are Made From
Not every crown is the same material, and the right choice depends on which tooth it is going on and how hard you grind. This is a conversation we have with you rather than a decision made for you.
Zirconia
The strongest of the tooth-coloured options, and our usual choice for back teeth where the biting force is highest. Modern zirconia is far more translucent than the early generations, so it no longer looks flat.
Porcelain and ceramic
The most natural-looking, because it handles light the way enamel does. Best suited to teeth that show when you smile. This is what our CEREC unit mills chairside.
Porcelain fused to metal
An older approach with a metal core under a porcelain surface. Strong and long-serving, though the metal margin can show as a dark line at the gum over time. We still use it where it is the right answer.
Gold
Rarely asked for now, but it is gentle on the opposing teeth and holds up extremely well on a back molar where nobody sees it.
Same-Day or Two Visits?
We can do it either way. A CEREC crown is designed, milled and fitted in one appointment, so you leave with the finished tooth and never wear a temporary. A lab-made crown takes two visits a couple of weeks apart, with a temporary in between, and gives a dental technician the chance to layer and characterise the porcelain by hand.
For a back tooth, same-day is usually the obvious choice. For a front tooth in a demanding smile, the extra time a technician can spend matching the tooth next to it can be worth the second visit. We will tell you which we would recommend and why.
Looking After a Crown
A crowned tooth is not immune to decay. The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth underneath it can, and it usually starts right at the margin where crown meets tooth. That makes flossing around a crown more important than flossing around an ordinary tooth, not less.
- Brush twice a day and floss around the margin daily
- Keep up your regular hygiene visits so we can check the margin
- If you grind your teeth, ask us about a night guard
- Avoid chewing ice and opening packaging with your teeth
How long a crown serves you depends on the tooth, the material, your bite and your home care, so we will give you a realistic expectation for your situation rather than a number off a chart.
Crown, Filling or Veneer?
These three get confused, and the difference is mostly about how much tooth is left. A filling replaces a small amount of lost tooth structure and is the right answer while most of the tooth is sound. A crown covers the whole tooth and is what you need once too little healthy structure remains to hold a filling — after a large fracture, or a root canal.
A veneer is a different job altogether: a thin facing bonded to the front of a tooth that is structurally fine but does not look how you want it to. If the tooth is sound and the issue is appearance, a veneer removes far less tooth than a crown does.
